Stewart Island - South Island
People often forget about this third island sitting south of the South Island. A ferry ride from Bluff will get you to this scenic island, where 80% of it is made up of the Rakiura National Park. The best way to explore it is by taking the Rakiura Great Walk. This is a multi-day hike to beaches, forest and historical landmarks. The walk is not too difficult and has huts and campsites that you must book into first. While you’re camping or staying in a hut, keep an eye out at night for New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi bird.
