Wanaka - South Island
Wanaka is like Queenstown’s relaxed brother. On the shore of the beautiful Lake Wanaka, this easygoing town is great to escape the crowds of Queenstown. However, expect it to come more alive in winter when there are two ski fields in close proximity. There’s Cardrona, which is a dream for those who love the park, and Treble Cone, the biggest ski field in the South Island. If you are going to spend a whole winter season in Wanaka, get there in autumn to set yourself up with a job before the rush. Plus, you can see the beautiful autumn colours on the trees lining the lake!
