Westport - South Island
Westport is the beginning of, what New Zealanders call, the "Wild West Coast". It was a bit too wild, actually. The surf was more "pumping" than what I did for my first lesson in Raglan, so I opted for the lazy option: taking a quick trip to Greymouth to drink beer! Monteith's Brewery is one of the most famous in New Zealand, which hosts brewery tours and has a cafe to try seven different beers. Alternatively, (or, as well as, if you think you can hold in the beer) there's the awesome white water rafting on the Buller River, with grade 3-4 rapids.
